Running a saline solution through the nasal passages has been recommended by practitioners of Ayurveda and yoga for thousands of years.

Nasal rinsing (as seen on Oprah) both stimulates and supports the natural cleansing function of the mucous membranes and easily clears nasal congestion, dust, pollen and other particulate matter from the nose.

Some people benefit from rinsing twice a day while others prefer it less often. In the next column are some guidelines to assist you in deciding what’s best for you, but ultimately listen to your own body. In our culture of quick fixes we sometimes lack the patience to listen to our bodies but over time it will tell you.

Most of our undesirable conditions didn’t appear overnight. A profound healing takes patience but don’t give up. This really, really works!

GENERAL HEALTH MAINTENANCE:
Rinse 1-2 times a day, upon rising and at least one hour before bedtime (this allows the mucous in your sinuses to drain before bed). You may use more often when needed, up to four times a day when sick. Regular use can help stop the accumulation of mucous and maintain healthy secretions of the ear, nose and throat often relieving sinus pressure.

To learn more about nasal rinsing, go to youtube.com and type in neti pot. You will find both instructional and funny videos which will teach you just how simple this little pot is to use.

Cold Sufferers: Rinse with the neti pot at least twice a day to flush out infection and hardened mucous. Do this for the duration of the cold.
Allergy sufferers: Rinse daily from the start to the end of the allergy season.
Chronic sinus sufferers: You are a tricky bunch. Try rinsing daily and if that feels good do it twice. Or maybe you get a headache and need to rinse once or twice a week.

As with any healthcare system, listen to your body. Some people find that using the neti pot daily creates pressure in the head; others decide it’s so refreshing they do it 2 and 3 times a day; still others do it only when they have a cold. Listen to your body! Listen to your body! Listen to your body! We can’t stress this enough. Only you know what’s best for you.

Instructions
Fill the neti pot just below its lip with warm water. Add heaping ½ teaspoon of sea salt and stir until it is thoroughly dissolved. Bend over the sink and turn your head to one side. Keeping the pot level, place the spout into the top nostril until it has a snug fit. Breathe through your mouth and slowly tip your head downward allowing the warm water to travel up through your sinuses and out the other nostril. You may need to adjust the angle of your head slightly in order to allow the water to flow out the other nostril. Use half the water and repeat on the other side. If you experience an uncomfortable sensation, adjust the level of salt. Sometimes too little salt can be as uncomfortable as too much salt. Once you’ve irrigated your sinuses, it is helpful to bend over at the waist (with the top of your head pointed towards the floor) and exhale out to release any trapped water.

Congested to the Max?
If you are particularly congested, the water may not actually flow through and out the other nostril. If this occurs, take in as much water as you can and blow your nose. Repeat again in 30 minutes.
Blow gently throughout your rinse, your membranes are sensitive and you don’t want water to enter your eustachian tubes!
If you experience discomfort while rinsing, adjust the level of salt or the water temperature. Take the time to discover what is most comfortable to you.

Comes with full instructions and a starter pack of mineral salt.
