The bark is decocted or used to produce extracts and tinctures. Quassia is a common ingredient in herbal bitters.

The bark of this plant is considered to be one of the most bitter naturally occurring substances known, a characteristic that gives rise to another common name for quassia wood — bitterwood. Its properties are due to the presence of a number of active compounds and bitter principles, including beta-sitosterol, isoparain, malic acid and quassialactol.
Quassia is also used as a natural insecticide.
Powdered quassia wood may be combined with water to make a spray for plants or it can be added directly to ponds and other bodies of water to prevent infestation of mosquito larvae.
