Product Description

Sweetgrass is a uniquely Native American scent found in the rituals of the Micmac, Seneca, Sioux and Cherokee people. It is used as a sacred smudge offering associated with certain shamanic rituals, including blessing, for purification in birth, consecration, and funerary rites.

Each bunch of Sweet grass is carefully harvested, complete from roots to tip, then neatly tied at the base, braided for its entire length, about 18 and 30 inches, and set aside to dry.

Sweetgrass is intended to be lit and burned in braided form, which, depending on the rite, may be accomplished over the course of several days.

As the braid is made, prayers are said, when the braid is burned, the prayers go up to heaven.

Although not a particularly ornamental grass, with vigorous rhizomes and irregular form, the early flowers are among the first grasses to bloom in spring. Braids can last for several years, although the sweet vanilla fragrance is strongest in the first year.

All braids are prayfully braided from a small farmer in Oregon with the utmost respect for the medicine of the plant and the understanding of its use, whether ceremony, dispelling negativity or raising the energy level of any area.

Botanical Name: Hierochloe odorata
